Brain Training Boosts Endurance

British military study finds 126 percent increase in time to exhaustion. Some new results from Samuele Marcora's "brain endurance training" protocol, funded by the British Ministry of Defence, have been declassified. Bradley Stulberg has a good article at Outside describing the findings.

Voices in Our Heads

Take control of the little voice in our heads...

Never allow it to say things like, “I can’t” or “I’m no good at this.” Replace any negative inner monologue with positive messages.

During a run or a race, repeat phrases like, “I feel good." or "I am strong." or "I am relaxed.”

I run and hear my favorite running quotes; many of which I share here under RUN ON. You'll be amazed at how this little mental trick can make a big difference, and pull you through a tough few kilometers.

Things to Make You Happy

• Move Your Body

• Count Your Blessings

• Laugh

• Help Someone Else

I routinely do the first and fourth. I try hard to do the second, and need to work on the third.

These are easy ways to improve our happiness quotas each day.

Believe in Yourself

Believe!

The first hurdle beginners need to overcome when it comes to running is standing up to the mental challenge. Most people overweight or not, shy away from running not because of a lack of physical prowess, but because they have a defect in themselves. This lack of belief does the most damage to new runners. But, you must remember, if you can walk for 30 to 40 minutes without needing assistance or ending up in a hospital, then you’re able to start a running program.

One way you can build a powerful belief in yourself and your boundless capabilities is to visualize success all the way through. I did this in the beginning and I continue to do it today. Sometimes I even find myself falling asleep to simple visualization of my next day's run. So, just picture yourself AS IF you’ve ALREADY achieved success, when you've completed that run. Then, you visualize what it feels like after a few dozen runs, and what it will feel like when you’ve lost the weight and became a true runner.

Further more this technique will be of great value when you're on a long run. Visualizing your run in chunks, or chunking, is a valuable mental tool in beating fatigue.

Visualization techniques have been proven to be effective at enticing the mind to behave in a predetermined pattern. And it’s used by top athletes to enhance performance in all types of sports. So why not take advantage of this simple technique to get what you want.

Put off by Music

Did you know that the wrong choice of music may actually put you off your runs?

It’s true. Researchers have found the blood vessels of exercisers subjected to music they didn’t like constricted six percent in just 30 minutes, reducing overall aerobic capacity by more than 10 percent. When exercisers listened to favorable music their blood vessels expanded 26 percent bringing in a 34 percent performance boost.

So people, choose correctly.

The Blessings of Aches

When you ache, you are feeling your body rebelling against the artificial inactivity of modern life. Your body knows, down in its genes, that you're supposed to sweat, supposed to be hungry, supposed to hurt. Your comfortable bloated inactive lifestyle is anathema to what your biology wants of you. Everytime you feel the burn in your muscles after a workout you are feeling your body slowly returning to the state it knows it should be in. One of activity. So revel in your pain. Enjoy your sweat. Laugh with your aches. You're closer to what your ancestors knew was the true state of being.
