Antarctic Ice Marathon - South Pole, Antarctica
It’s the world’s southernmost marathon, ringing part of the Antarctic Circle just a few hundred miles from the South Pole. Held in November on a glacier camp at the foot of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica, itʼs the wind that gets to you. It blows steadily at 10 to 25 mph, with average temperatures between 0 and 10 degrees F. Due to Antarctica’s unsettled weather, it’s normal to have a several-day delay just to set out for the starting line. And with a five-day itinerary once you get there, you’ve got limited time to finish. If not, aid snowmobiles will come, since prolonged exposure to these temperatures and wind chill is so dangerous.
