Beginning runners often need to know how they can tell if they're running at the correct, easy level. Not pushing too hard too soon. The answer hasn't changed since I've been running and first heard it from my coach. I passed it on once more last week to my girlfriend.
There's a test for it. We call it the talk test.
If you can run and carry on a normal conversation at the same time, you're running at the right pace. If you are huffing and puffing and have to pause between words, you're running too fast.
Now her question, rightly so, was what if you're alone and not running with a conversation partner. My answer, with a smile, is: talk to yourself.
She has yet to tell me if she uses the talk test.
