Madrid metro fare hike

So the metro ticket for one ride has gone up 50%. It went from 1 euro to 1.50 euros last week. It's quite a jump and doesn't sit well with me. I haven't had a chance to ask anyone about it. Most people are on holiday or, like me, don't have to ride the metro much in August. Still a hike of .50 seems excessive. Perhaps the Madrid government is trying to take advantage of the touristas and pocket the money. Though there might be a lot of noise about it come September. We all know about the debts the government has, but is this the way to pay them off? Make it harder for working people to travel to work? Anyone have a comment?
